30 sucks

Saw a picture similar to this one day while cruising pinterest... thought it would be a clever gift for our "little" brother... was super simple to do:
Place styrofoam or floral foam in the bottom of a box (can make with card stock or wrap a small box.)  Fill with 30 (40) suckers... label was made by typing, printing and mounting the sentment "30 sucks".  (Can do 40 sucks, etc).

Tada!

Tuesday Tutorial: free pattern!

Ok, yes, we are slacking off here.  But, to make up for it, today I’m giving you the link to a free pattern to make an adorable dress for your little one!  No, it’s not my pattern, but you will still totally love it! Check it out!
IMG_2851
I know, right, what could be cuter!  And it was sooo simple!  I had never done ruffles, and I hate hemming, but I still had everything done start to finish in just over 2 hours!
IMG_2864
And of course with pictures of puppies and duckies, it makes the dress all that much cuter!
IMG_2900
And you can even have us customize a hairbow to go with it…or if you  aren’t a sewer, of course we’ll make the dress for you too!  But I know some of you can sew and love to do it, so here’s the link for the adorable dress pattern.  (Please don’t ask me my opinion on fabric.com though, if you do I may just show you the large boxes in my house waiting to be returned and fill you full of the story!)
Love the pictures?  Check out my friend Angela at www.lillygracephotography.com.  She’s on facebook too.  As you can tell, she does an awesome job!  Hard to believe that my daughter kept saying “NO MORE PICTURES!”  And I think she meant it, we just kept tricking her!

Tuesday tutorial- bleach art

Something I saw on pinterest that I had to try... using bleach to make a design on a colored shirt!  It was surprisingly easy...
Start with a clean colored shirt and a Clorox bleach (for whites!) Pen
For this shirt I used a stencil cit with my cricut, but the pen comes with a "fine tip" so if you're really good you can draw it on.  Next, use the bleach to make your design and then let the bleach do its thing... just watch and you'll see the color fade...  amount of time is gonna vary depending on colorfastness of the shirt.
When its ready rinse the bleach off, then wash and wear!

Tuesday Tutorial- foaming soap

Let's make some foaming soap!  It's super easy.  I learned how one day when I accidentally the wrong refill for my soap dispenser!!

-What you need is a soap dispenser (you can refill a used soap dispenser if you want)
-regular liquid soap
-water

add about 1/2-1 inch of soap (depending on the size of the bottle)  to the bottom of the bottle
Fill the rest of the bottle with water and give a little shake.

That's it!

Tuesday Tutorial: Rice Krispie pops!

ok, I know, its Thursday, but it’s pretty nice out here, so we’re spending the time outside and getting some seeds planted inside…the kids are way excited to see that the broccoli we planted last Thursday is already growing!

So, on to the tutorial.  I like cake pops, but hate the sweetness.  I wanted to try Rice Krisipie ones, but no one had a great tutorial on the internet, so I made my own.  After a little experimenting and a sleepless night freaking out about it, I finally just got up and made these.  They were a hit!

cake pops 005

Don’t you love the bright blue color?  that would be my son’s favorite!  Here’s how  I did it.  Mix up your  Rice Krispie treats like it says on the package.  Next roll them into balls, stick the cake pop stick in a little bit of the melted candy melts and connect ball to stick :)   Then place them upside down on a plate and place them in the fridge for at least a few hours before dipping.

cake pops 002

You can still reshape them a little once you have cooled them, but the hold together much better for dipping this way.  Also, these are definitely not as smooth as regular cake pops, so if you want something to be perfect, go with the regular cake pops.  Once they are cooled, dip and decorate like you would any other cake pop!

We did blue with cow sprinkles and made brown cows (no they are NOT pigs, even though they look like it!)

Trust me, these tasted WAY better than a cake pop, not nearly so sweet!  Give it a  try, other bonus…not near as much messing around as a regular cake pop!

plus, they made the birthday boy really happy!

Tuesday Tutorial- photo magnets

Ok, I know its Wednesday, but better late than never!  Wanted to quick share a favorite old craft that is quick and easy... making photo magnets!

Whenever I go to home shows or whatever, I collect the free magnets, then take them home and repurpose them...

Simply chose a favorite photo, add adhesive to the back, and stick to the magnet!  Then just trim away the extra.

Tuesday Tutorial: Shaping Crayons

pete birthday 005

We've all seen where they make those shaped crayons on Pinterest (because by now, you are all pinterest followers, right!).  Sunday we celebrate my son’s 5th birthday (which is actually today!), and of course this year his theme was Hawkeye, even though the rest of us are all Cyclone fans, how this happened I am not quite sure!  So, the first thing I did was gather up all my loose crayons in the drawer, and made some Hawkeye crayons.

The process really is quite easy.  First you peel all the crayons.  Biggest hint, the cheap crayons peel very easily, Crayola crayons do not.

pete birthday 002

I found that if I soaked them over night they came off a little bit easier, and then you could just rub off that gummy layer.  I think they are glued or waxed on or something.

Next you cut them into little pieces and place them in an oven safe silicone mold.

pete birthday 001

I am not exactly sure where my sassy sister picked this up, but I know it was in Des Moines over Black Friday shopping.  I got a LOT of use out of these molds this weekend!

Once your crayon molds are all filled, throw them on a pan and into a 230 degree oven for 15 minutes.  They should melt by then, but you may have to add a few minutes depending on your brand of crayons.  Here, the Crayola ones melted the quickest and the smoothest.  The crayons will kinda separate out, with the more waxy brands (cheapest) going to the top and the Crayola ones on the bottom.  Overall, I kinda liked the affect, gave it a multilayered look, even though they may have all been blue or pink or yellow or black.

Once they are all melted, take them off the pan and let the silicone tray sit somewhere cool.  After they are completely hardened, pop them out.  It’s really just that easy!  You can do all sorts of things like even doing al different color crayons too if you want.

  pete birthday 003

Then, after the tray was washed, we used it to make ice cubes, jello, and little chocolate candies for the cupcakes.

pete birthday 011

Don’t you love these cupcakes?  They were a compromise for my mom and son who share the same birthday.  She kept telling him that he was going to have a Hawkeye cake with pink flowers, so instead we dyed the frosting a light pink, swirled it like a flower and put on the little chocolate Hawkeyes.  They both liked them!   If you want the recipe for these Samoa cupcakes, you can find it at this website.  Word of caution though.  Let your caramel sauce cool completely before you start adding powdered sugar.  I didn’t let mine cool enough and therefore kept trying to add more powdered sugar to get it harder.  It ended up with way too much sugar in the end and was no longer light, more dense.   We did have cake though too, made by our friend Lindsay.  Isn’t it awesome (kinda like my son’s smile!)

pete birthday 009

Oh, and finally I did have home made ice cream too, some people requested the recipe, so here it is.  I adapted the recipe a little from the Lauren's Latest website.  I forgot to take a picture, but she has one on the website.

Here it goes:

  • 2 cups Heavy Whipping Cream
  • 1 cup Whole Milk
  • ½ cups Granulated Sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Coconut Extract
  • 1 pinch Salt
  • ¼ cups Cocoa Powder (good Quality)
  • 1-¼ cup Dry Brownie Mix
  • 1/2 cup toasted coconut
  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
  • A few hours in advance, place the ice cream maker bowl into the freezer to completely freeze, I actually just store mine in the freezer so it is always ready to go.

In a large bowl or measuring cup, stir all ingredients together except coconut and mini chips until combined. I used a whisk to ensure everything was thoroughly combined.

Place the frozen ice cream bowl and paddle onto the machine and cover with the clear lid. Turn the machine on and pour the ice cream base through the top of the machine into the moving bowl.

Churn 15-20 minutes until everything is frozen and smooth, adding coconut and chocolate chips over the last few minutes.  I usually then transfer to another bowl and freeze it in the freezer for at least a few hours to get a better texture, but you can go ahead and eat it right away.  Store in the freezer until ready to serve.

K, so that was a bit of an overload today, but hope you enjoyed it all!

    Tuesday Tutorial: Decorating Project

So recently my coworkers have been giving me a hard time because I've been in my office for over a year, but haven't really made the place "home" with any decorating touches.  Which inspired me to create some canvas art, which I saw a few months ago on the pink cricut website.
sorry-- this came out sideways... just tilt your head to the side- go ahead- no one's watching!
     Supplies you need:
Canvas (this is a 12x12 that I got from Michaels)
stencil (I used my CRICUT {Damask Decor cartridge} and permanent vinyl)
paint (I used acrylic paint in tan and purple)
    paintbrush

First, paint your base color- if you don't mind the color of your canvas, you can skip this step.
I wanted my piece to have a distressed look, so I just sort of slopped the paint on, leaving spots that are not covered well
Allow time for paint to dry!

sorry for the wierd colors on this one
Next put your stencil over your design.  BY using the vinyl, I was able to stick it down really well, which led to clean crisp lines (I think I cut this design out somewhere between 10 and 11.5 for a 12x12 canvas)
Cover your canvas with your other color of paint, making sure to get good coverage in the parts that show Again, let it dry

After the paint has dried, go ahead and peel off the stencil.  The next step is to use a little sandpaper to rough up the edges... I actually sanded over the entire picture but it is hard to see!

As a finishing touch, I spritzed all over the canvas with glimmer mist. Unfortunately the spritz bled into the canvas, so it wasn't a splattered effect, but more splotchy- but it still looks cool!

The finished project, plus 2 more... can't wait to hang them up!

Tuesday Tutorial: Valentines for your family!

    hunt 012

That has to be good, right?  Trust me, it is!  And I know because I’m eating the finished product right now, the only thing that would make it better for me is some ice cream, but I don’t have any here right now!

I’m not good at pictures as we all know, but here’s the beauty shot from Kevin and Amanda, and trust me, you want to go there to get the step by step recipe for these Chocolate Chip Lava Cookies.  They are awesome, and incredibly easy, without much of a mess.  And, your husband will love you for them.

    Chocolate Chip Lava Cookies

Next up ,the kids, and you know that I have to use my own pictures for these.  I have seen them all over Pinterest, and had to make my own.

    hunt 009

They really are fairly easy, I ordered the little shovels off of Ebay, they’re cheap and you can get a huge variety of colors there.  Next, I printed up my own little saying on the computer and attached it using my fun little punches and some valentines paper.

Trust me, your kids will dig you too for making these!

Tuesday Tutorial: Add a little love to a busy day!

SO: even if you are a very busy mom (like us), I am using this post to demonstrate how quick and easy it is to bake up a little extra love- just in time for V-day!  I got the idea from pinterest, the picture I saw used the the penut butter kiss cookies, and added the chocolate heart instead, but I am WAY to lazy  busy for that!

     Ingredients:
Favorite Cookie Dough (I bought a big bag of of dough, that was already shaped into balls- can't get any easier than that!)
    Chocolate hearts (Dove/Hersheys make them)
    Steps:
    Place cookies on cookie sheet
Place unwrapped chocolate heart on top
    Bake according to package/recipe
    enjoy with your special someone!

    Super easy, super special!

PS (the cookies shown above are toffee flavored, and were pretty yummy!)

Tuesday Tutorial: Getting your kids to eat

Tonight I had a struggle.  My husband made a wonderful roast in the Crockpot and then I could not get my kids to decide to eat it.  For some reason pizza goldfish sounded better to them.  So finally, I told my son we were having Angry Bird nests and he got really excited.  I put some shredded roast on top of a nest of rice and threw a few green bean “pigs” nearby and he ate his food right up.  Amazing what a fun name can do.  And, for dessert they just asked for popcorn.  I was ok with that…better than pizza gold fish tonight.

    misc 001

I’m pretty sure she is way too cute to try and force her to eat and get mad.  She needs the calories like any growing kid, but she just gives me “the look” and it’s easy to want to give her and her brother Oreos instead of food (thanks for that one dad!)

So I did a little research from the experts and here is what I came up with.

Web MD has a great article about what to expect from your child at mealtimes and answers some of those questions we all seem to have.

Picky Eater battles at meals are also discussed here

What else have I found that works?  Have them take as many bites as their age.  My 4-year-old will often end up taking a lot more.  Sometimes he just assumes he doesn’t like something and once he takes a few bites he realizes it was ok.  If they’ll let you, feed it to them.  For whatever reason, my kids sometimes are lazy and if I get them started on a bite, they’ll eat the rest on their own.  Sit down with them and don’t go to the next course (dessert) until they are all done.  Once eyes are on dessert, no one will focus on the meal.  My husband tends to be a horrible offender of that one!  I also like to let the kids help in mealtime, whether it be picking out the food or helping me make it, it always seems to go down better if they are involved.  And, make mealtime focused on mealtime.  Don’t have the TV on, and make sure you all sit down as a family.

Am I perfect at all of these things?  No, but we keep trying and eventually when they’re hungry, my kids just tend to eat!

    YES, we are still crafting!

Yes, amidst all the Tuesday Tutorials, we want you to know that we are still crafting like crazy! Here are just a few of the things we've been busiest with lately, as well as a few new things we're trying! As always, let us know if you would like something and we'll work on the sizes, colors and pricing from there! Most items come sized infant through adult.  Please keep in mind, I am not a photographer.  Someday we really need to get a photographer friend though!  Any takers, let us know and we’ll get you some great props!
